This was a very rewarding project inspired by the teaching of the wonderful Jennie Rayment.

This cushion cover is my own mashup of techniques that Jennie has taught from several different places (Quilting Classroom, her Books and DVDs, and JustHands-On). On the front of the cushion, I have appliqued the classic patchwork design, Joseph’s Coat. I stitched 4 ‘Fancy Fandangos’ on the corners of the border to add some more detailing (those are Jennie’s own invention shown in her ‘Texture into Sudoku’ DVD. They are great fun to make – like origami in fabric!

The project marks several firsts for me – this is the first time I have tried Kona Cotton (which I am very happy with – I love the colour range and the fabric). It’s the first time I’ve been brave enough to try some stippling on a real project (I love the ‘puffy’ dimension this adds. The first time I’ve used cord around the edge of a project. The first finished project I made using something I screen printed using Screen Sensation. My first time making a Joseph’s Coat block. I have to say I’m very pleased by the result I got!

I am using this cushion on my office chair, to keep me more upright in it, and I added the ‘belt loops’ you see on the back so I can strap it to the back of the office chair to keep it in place.

The front of the cushion uses the pieced top with a layer of Warm and Natural batting behind it to allow for the plush quilting. I used a piece of less expensive white cotton on the back of it to protect the wadding from being abraded by the cushion pad, and to make it more stable for washing. I used a 22in cushion pad, and made the finished cover to be 20in, for a plump, solid look.
